Transformers Opens with $201.2 Million

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen earned $112 million Friday to Sunday — bringing it’s total since opening Wednesday to an impressive $201.2 million. That total is 2nd only to The Dark Knight which earned $203.8 million during it’s opening 5 days last summer. What’s probably more impressive is that Transformers earned as much as it did considering the beating it took from critics. It’ll be interesting to see how far the movie drops next weekend.
Dropping to 2nd for the weekend was The Proposal. The romantic comedy, starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, earned $18.4 million, bringing it’s total gross to $69 million after 2 weekends in release.
Continuing strong in 3rd spot was The Hangover. The comedy, starring Bradly Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis, earned another $17.2 million to bring it’s total to $183.2 million after 4 weekends in release.
Disney/Pixar’s Up finished the weekend in 4th spot, adding another $13 million. That brings it’s 5-week total to $250.2 million — making it the highest grossing movie of 2009, passing Star Trek which has earned $246.2 million to date.
Rounding out the top five films, My Sister’s Keeper opened with $12 million. The movie stars Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin.
Next weekend’s new releases include Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Public Enemies.
