Movie Review: The Hangover

The Hangover is a movie about the dream bachelor party of almost any 20-30 something-year-old that I know. A few buddies go to Vegas and wake up the next morning with the groom missing, one of the groomsmen married to a stripper, Mike Tyson’s tiger in the bathroom and a stolen cop car waiting at the valet. The best part is they have absolutely no memory of what happened. What more could you ask for? That’s pretty much the story of “The Hangover”. It’s an absolutely hilarious movie and one that I strongly recommend.
The movie stars Bradley Cooper, who you might remember from “Alias”; Ed Helms, who also appears on “The Office”; Zach Galifianakis as the crazy, bearded, soon-to-be-brother-in-law; and Justin Bartha as the groom. Heather Graham also makes a brief appearance as a Vegas stripper. The four men are great together, with Galifianakis being the standout. The guy was really, really funny in pretty much every scene in which he appeared. I am certain this movie will jump start a great career as a comedic actor. Cooper and Helms do a fine job of holding their own in the movie as well. Helms has become famous on “The Office” for the musical numbers he belts out now and then and he doesn’t disappoint in this movie with a hilarious rendition of his take on the night’s events. I love it when that guy sings.
My one criticism about this movie would be all the trailers and promotional clips that were released by the studio. Did they really have to give away so much of the movie? I have to be honest, I never heard a thing about “The Hangover” until about a week before I found out about the screening. I ended up watching one trailer before the movie and have watched a few different ones since and I really am quite shocked at how much of the movie was given away.
Nevertheless, “The Hangover” is a great movie to watch with a group of buddies and have a good laugh. There’s already talk of a sequel and there is no doubt this movie deserves one. I’m not sure what situation they would find themselves in next time, but if it’s even as remotely funny as the mess they found themselves in on their trip to Vegas, then I’m going to be first in line to check it out. I never thought I would be so happy to see the word “hangover” or have anything associated with a hangover in my life but this movie has done it for me. (8 out of 10)
