Watchmen Tops Box Office

Watchmen was the top movie at the box office this weekend, earning a reported $55.6 million. Many are calling the film’s performance a disappointment considering estimates had the movie coming in anywhere from $60 – $70+ million. Unfortunately, for the Watchmen, although the movie opened strong with $25 million on Friday (including midnight screenings), the movie couldn’t hold onto the momentum, dropping 25% on Saturday and a projected 40% on Sunday.
Falling to 2nd place for the weekend was Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail which earned $8.8 million. After 3 weekends in release, the movie has earned more than $76 million.
Continuing steady in 3rd place was Taken. The thriller, starring Liam Neeson, added another $7.4 million to bring its 6-week total to $118 million.
In 4th place was Slumdog Millionaire which earned another $6.9 million. The Best Picture winner has accumulated $125 million to-date.
Rounding out the top 5 films was Paul Blart: Mall Cop which earned $4.2 million. After 8 weekends in release, the Kevin James comedy has earned $133 million.
Next weekend’s new releases include the Disney’s remake of Race to Witch Mountain, Universal’s remake of The Last House on the Left and the comedy Miss March.
