Movie Review: The Pink Panther 2In “The Pink Panther 2″, Steve Martin once again stars as the bumbling French detective, Inspector Jacques Clouseau. In this chapter in the life and times of Jacques Clouseau, the Inspector has been chosen to head a group of international detectives who set out to stop a globe-trotting thief known as The Tornado, who specializes in stealing some of the most famous and prestigious artifacts in the world. Amongst the squad who will try to take down The Tornado is an English detective called Pepperidge (Alfred Molina), an Italian with a really, really long name (Andy Garcia), a Japanese whiz kid (Yuki Matsuzaki), the love of Clouseau’s life, Nicole (Emily Mortimer) and his trusty sidekick Ponton (Jean Reno). As in the first movie, the priceless Pink Panther Diamond ends up getting stolen and it is up to Clouseau and his unskillful, inept and blundering investigation tactics to save the day.

I have to admit, “The Pink Panther 2″ kind of got me by surprise – it was funny. It’s pretty much what you probably expect it to be in that most of the movie is just silly slapstick humour but there was more than one occasion where I found myself laughing or chuckling. The exchanges between the human resources manager (played by Lily Tomlin) and Clouseau were particularly funny. Clouseau’s interaction with some of the members of his investigative dream team were amusing. His budding romance with Nicole was cute. All in all, it was a pretty enjoyable time at the theatre.

I’m not going to sit here and tell you that “The Pink Panther 2″ is the greatest comedy of all time. In fact, it’s not even close to being Steve Martin’s best comedy of all time. You should check out “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” or “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” if you want to see that. However, it’s good, clean humour and it definitely has a few laughs and if that is all you feel like getting from a movie during these dreary winter days (at least in Canada), then I would suggest checking out this movie sometime in the next couple of weeks. It’s nice, sometimes, to see a clean comedy that isn’t laced with the “f-word” every thirty seconds, doesn’t think having sex with a donkey is funny and doesn’t repeatedly rely on naked women to generate some humour. Okay, who am I kidding, the naked women would have been funny. But besides that, “The Pink Panther 2″ is just plain and simple good fun. (7 out of 10)
