HSM3 Tops Box Office

High School Musical 3: Senior Year held on to the top spot for the weekend, earning an estimated $15 million. That marks a nearly 65% drop since opening last weekend — although that figure could be attributed to Halloween being on Friday this year. The movie has now earned $61.7 million.

Opening in 2nd place was the Kevin Smith comedy Zack and Miri Make a Porno with a disappointing $10.6 million. I was pulling for the movie to do better, but I guess audiences just aren’t ready for a movie with the word “porno” in the title. It should be noted that the opening was on par with Kevin Smith’s biggest hits (Clerks II opened with $10 million; Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back opened with $11 million) — however it also marks the worst opening of a Seth Rogen movie.

Dropping to 3rd for the weekend was the horror Saw 5 which brought in $10 million. Although the movie played strongly on Friday (it was the day’s top earner) it fizzled for the remainder of the weekend — dropping 66% since opening last weekend. To date, the movie has earned $45.8 million.

Clint Eastwood’s Changeling expanded to more than 1,800 locations this weekend and entered the top 10 films at #4 with $9.4 million.

Rounding out the top 5 films was the new release The Haunting of Molly Hartley which earned $6 million.

Next weekend’s new releases include the animated sequel Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, Role Models starring Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott and Soul Men starring Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac.
