Marvel Officially Announces Avengers

Marvel Studios has officially announced that Robert Downey Jr. will don the Iron Man suit for a planned Avengers movie. Iron Man director Jon Favreau will serve as an executive producer on the project. In making the announcement, Marvel confirmed that some of the characters we can expect to see in the movie include Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk “and more”. The movie is currently scheduled for a July 15, 2011 release.

In addition, Marvel took the opportunity to officially announce that Don Cheadle will take on the role of Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes in Iron Man 2. Cheadle will replace Terrence Howard who played the character in the first film. The sequel is due in theaters May 7, 2010.

Both films will be distributed by Paramount Pictures.
