Tropic Thunder Tops Box Office

After four weeks at the top of the box office, The Dark Knight finally met his match as Tropic Thunder came out victorious for the weekend with an estimated $26 million in ticket sales. The comedy, starring Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr., has earned $37 million since opening Wednesday — despite protests from groups regarding the movie’s use of the word “retard”.
So, that leaves The Dark Knight to finish in 2nd spot for the weekend with an estimated $16.7 million. With that, the movie now sits with $471.4 million after 5 weekends of release — surpassing the original Star Wars ($460 million) on the all-time list domestic box office list. The next hurdle for TDK — $500 million.
Speaking of Star Wars, the newly released animated movie, Star Wars: The Clone Wars opened somewhat disappointingly in 3rd spot with $15.5 million. Hey, I consider myself to be a pretty big fan of the Star Wars movies, but I have no interest in seeing Clone Wars. I’ll wait till it comes out on video. Take that, George Lucas.
In 4th spot for the weekend was another new release — Mirrors — which earned $11.1 million. The horror/thriller stars Kiefer Sutherland and Paula Patton.
Rounding out the top 5 films was Pineapple Express which added another $10 million in its second weekend of release. The stoner comedy starring Seth Rogen and James Franco has now earned a respectable $62.9 million.
The weekend’s only other new release to crack the top ten was Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona which finished 10th with $3.7 million. The movie stars Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson.
Next weekend’s new releases include The Rocker starring Rainn Wilson, Death Race starring Jason Statham, The House Bunny starring Anna Faris and The Longshots starring Ice Cube.
