Harry Potter 6 Moved to Summer 2009

In a somewhat surprising move, Warner Bros. announced today that they will be moving the release date for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince from November of this year to July 17, 2009. In making the announcement, Warners cited a couple of reasons. First, that the movie was better suited for a summer release. After all, the last Harry Potter was released during the summer and it was the 2nd highest grossing movie of the franchise. The second reason for the move is the writers strike that happened late last year/early this year. Due to the strike, the theory is that there won’t be as many quality movies released in 2009. As a result, they’ve moved Harry Potter to fill a gap in their release schedule.
Now, if you’re a skeptic and choose not to believe the bullshit that studios are so fond of feeding the public, you could take the move in an entirely different way. First, executives got an early look at the completed movie, decided it sucked and moved it to give time for edits. Or, given the success of The Dark Knight (also a Warner Bros. movie), executives decided to move their other big earner into next year. After all, would you rather have a really good 2008 and a lackluster 2009. Or, would you rather have a good 2008 and a good 2009. Of course, this is all speculation, so take it however you want.
The bottom line is that we’re going to have to wait nearly another year for the next Harry Potter in Summer 2009. And considering the Potter book series is finished, that’s a long time to wait for fans. On the bright side, the time between movie versions of Half Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows just got that much shorter.
