Get Smart Tops Box Office

In this weekend’s “battle of the comedies”, Get Smart was the clear winner, topping the box office with an estimated $39 million in ticket sales. The movie, based on the 1960s TV series of the same name, stars Steve Carell as Maxwell Smart who is teamed up with the beautiful Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway) on a mission to thwart the latest plot for world domination by the evil crime syndicate known as KAOS. The movie also stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Alan Arkin and Terence Stamp.

Meanwhile, the weekend’s clear comedy loser was The Love Guru starring Mike Myers. In it’s opening weekend, the movie finished a distant 4th earning only $14 million. The movie was a bomb with both audiences and critics based on scores at Rotten Tomatoes where the movie ranks among the worst of the year so far. Ouch.

In 2nd place was the animated comedy Kung Fu Panda. The movie, featuring voicework by Jack Black as the titular panda, dropped only 35% from last weekend, earning an $21.7 million. After 3 weekends of release, the movie has totaled more than $155 million.

Dropping from 1st to 3rd was The Incredible Hulk which lost more than 60% of it’s audience from last weekend, earning $21.5 million. After 2 weekends in release, the movie, which stars Edward Norton and Liv Tyler, has earned $96 million.

Rounding out the top 5 films was M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening which brought in $10 million, a 67% drop over last weekend’s opening gross. The movie, starring Mark Wahlberg, has now earned a total of $50.2 million.

Next weekend’s new releases include WALL-E from Disney/Pixar and Wanted starring James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman.
