Indy Scores Box Office Victory

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was the top movie at the box office this weekend earning an estimated $101 million — placing the movie 10th in terms of all-time opening weekends. The movie has earned more than $125 million since opening on Thursday evening. I guess that lays to rest doubts about whether there was any interest in a 65-year-old action hero. The only question that remains is Whether Indy will have the legs to continue earning at the box office. For the movie to earn $200-250 million is pretty much a given. Whether it will have the endurance to be this year’s top-earner is another question altogether.

Last weekend’s top movie, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian dropped nearly 60% of its audience since opening a week ago, earning only $23 million in its sophomore weekend. I guess that pretty much answers the question about how many more trips to Narnia audiences could expect.

Meanwhile, Iron Man continued to bring in the crowds earning $20 million in its 4th week of release — dropping only 36% from last weekend. To date, the Marvel superhero flick has grossed $252 million.

Rounding out the top 5 films were What Happens in Vegas in 4th with $9 million ($54 million to-date) and Speed Racer in 5th with $4 million ($36 million to-date).

Next weekend sees the release of Sex and the City, a continuation of the long-running TV series and the fright flick The Strangers starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman.
