Horton Tops Box Office

Horton Hears a Who was the top movie at the box office this weekend earning an estimated $45.1 million. At least a couple of those dollars came from me seeing as how I ended up seeing the movie twice — first on Friday night which was very busy and again on Saturday night in a theater that was only 1/2 full. Either way, I enjoyed the movie, both times.
The movie ranks as the best opening weekend for a stars Jim Carrey (and Steve Carell) flick since Bruce Almighty (they starred together) back in 2003 but it wasn’t enough to match the opening weekend of Carrey’s other Seuss movie, The Grinch, which opened with $55 million back in 2000. It also surpassed The Cat in the Hat starring Mike Myers which opened with $38 million in 2003.
Horton replaced 10,000 BC which fell to 2nd place in its 2nd weekend of release. The movie dropped 54% from its opening weekend haul to bring in an estimated $16.4 million — $61.2 million to date.
Of the weekend’s other new releases, Never Back Down earned a solid $8.6 million — which is respectable considering the movie had virtually no “name” actors attached (other than Djimon Hounsou in a supporting role) and it was released by the relatively newly formed Summit Entertainment. Meanwhile, Universal’s Doomsday starring Rhona Mitra stumbled to a 7th place finish earning only $4.7 million.
Rounding out the top-5 films were College Road Trip in 4th place with $7.8 million ($24 million to-date) and Vantage Point in 5th with $5.4 million ($59.2 million to-date).
Next weekend’s new releases include Drillbit Taylor starring Owen Wilson, Shutter starring Joshua Jackson and Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns.
