Cloverfield Attacks Box Office

Cloverfield was the top movie at the box office this weekend earning an estimated $41 million — which is roughly on track with what industry insiders had expected. The monster movie has already surpassed its production budget of $25 million. However, expect a big drop next week as pretty much anyone interested in the whole “monster” mysterly likely saw it this weekend to avoid being spoiled by the hordes who saw it opening weekend.
Finishing a relatively strong 2nd was the romantic comedy 27 Dresses which earned $22.4 million. The movie, starring Katherine Heigl and James Marsden did well in capitalizing on those (ie. women) not interested in seeing Cloverfield.
Dropping to 3rd spot for the weekend was The Bucket List. The movie, starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, earned $15.1 million bringing its gross so far to $42.7 million.
Finishing in 4th spot was the teen pregnancy dramedy Juno which continued its strong performance at the box office earning another $10.2 million. After 7 weekends of release, the movie has earned in excess of $85 million and is a likely contender to cross the famed $100 million barrier sometime in the next couple of weeks.
Rounding out the top-5 films was the Nicolas Cage starrer National Treasure: Book of Secrets which zeroed in on the $200 million mark bringing in $8.1 million in its 5th weekend of release. The movie has now earned $198 million and now ranks as the top grossing film of Cage’s career.
The weekend’s only other major release was Mad Money which finished in 7th spot with $7.7 million — which is honestly more than I expected. The movie, which was a bomb with critics, stars Katie Holmes, Queen Latifah and Diane Keaton.
Next weekend’s new releases include Rambo starring Sylvester Stallone, the spoof Meet the Spartans, Untraceable starring Diane Lane and How She Move.
