National Treasure Sequel Tops Box Office

National Treasure: Book of Secrets was the top movie at the box office this weekend earning an estimated $45.5 million. The Nicolas Cage sequel out-performed the original which earned $35 million when it was released in 2004. Should estimates hold true, the movie will mark the best opening of Cage’s career, besting Ghost Rider which opened with $45.3 million earlier this year.
Last weekend’s top movie I Am Legend starring Will Smith fell to 2nd spot dropping 55% of its opening weekend office and earning $34.2 million. After 2 weekends of release, the movie has sold $137 million in tickets.
Also in its 2nd weekend of release, Alvin and the Chipmunks earned $29 million, dropping only 34% of its audience. The movie has now earned $84.8 million.
In other new releases, Charlie Wilson’s War opened in 4th place with $9.6 million. The movie stars Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Also in its first weekend of release, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street earned $9.3 million, for a 5th place finish. (It should be noted that the Johnny Depp/Tim Burton collaboration opened on only 1,200 screens.)
In 6th spot, P.S. I Love You starring Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler opened with $6.5 million.
Rounding out the weekends new releases was the disappointing performance of Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. The comedy spoof from producer Judd Apatow and starring John C. Reilly earned only $4.1 million for an 8th place finish.
