A Legendary Weekend at the Box Office

Anyone who doubted that Will Smith was a box office legend had their concerns effectively laid to rest this weekend as his new release, I Am Legend, infiltrated the box office and confirmed that Smith is, indeed, one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars.
I Am Legend dominated the box office this weekend with gross domestic ticket sales of $76.5 million. With Smith’s cut of that massive chunk of change, I guess Jada can expect a nice present under the Christmas tree this year.
A smaller, but equally impressive opening weekend was enjoyed by Alvin and the Chipmunks, the cute live/animated film starring Jason Lee and a cast of furry animated friends. Alvin, Simon and Theodore managed to fill up their coffers for the winter with a cool $45 million.
The remaining members of the weekend’s top five paled in comparison to the top draws.
The Golden Compass lost its audience, as it saw its box office sales drop by 65%. It brought in $9 million during its second weekend of release, putting it in third place.
Enchanted took fourth place, earning $6 million in its fourth week of release. This brings its total at the box office to a very respectable $92.2 million.
Rounding out the top five was No Country for Old Men, which earned $3 million in its sixth week of release. This brings its box office total to $33.6 million.
Next week, the box office will see a little something for everyone, just in time for Christmas, as an action blockbuster (National Treasure: Book of Secrets), a comedy (Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story), a sappy romance (P.S.: I Love You), a horror/fantasy (Sweeney Todd), and an Oscar-baiting drama (Charlie Wilson’s War) face off at the box office. I am putting my money on National Treasure but, hey, you never know….
Stay tuned to this space for next weekend’s box office update.
