Millions See Saw

For the third year in a row, the Halloween box office was plundered by a notorious serial killer, as the fourth installment of the Saw franchise scooped $32.1 million from North American moviegoers during its opening weekend. This was slightly below Saw III’s opening weekend earnings of $33.6 million, but slightly ahead of Saw II’s opening weekend earnings of $31.7 million.
In a distant second place was Steve Carell’s new comedy, Dan in Real Life, which earned $12.1 million in its opening weekend.
Experiencing a dramatic drop at the box office was Josh Harnett’s new film, 30 Days of Night, which earned $6.7 million. This is a considerable difference from last weekend’s first place opening and $16 million in box office sales.
Continuing to cling to the box office top five is The Game Plan, which earned $6.3 million during its fifth week in release, bringing its box office total to $77.1 million.
Rounding out the top five is Tyler Perry’s sleeper hit, Why Did I Get Married, which earned $5.7 million during its third weekend in release, bringing its box office total to $47.3 million.
Next weekend sees release of the highly-anticipated Ridley Scott film, American Gangster, starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe, as well as Jerry Seinfeld’s Bee Movie. With two very different target audiences, the big question for next weekend will be – Who will prevail at the box office? The parents or their children?
As a parent, my money is on the children – stay tuned to this space to find out.
