Movie Review: SuperbadSuperbad is the story of three high school geeks who promise to supply the alcohol to a booze-soaked teenage party in hopes that one of the drunk gals at the party will give themselves up to the sex-deprived boys. In order to get the alcohol, one of the geeks buys what could be the worst fake id in the history of fake ids. On it he gives himself a single alias – McLovin. Seth (Jonah Hill), Evan (Michael Cera) and Fogell – aka McLovin – (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) head off to the liquor store with the fake id to buy the drinks but little do they know what lies ahead for them. What seems like a fairly routine night in the lives of many teens ends up being a night full of crime and craziness as the boys seem to hit every imaginable (and unimaginable for that matter) roadblock on their way to the promised land – the high school party.

Superbad is one of those movies that may pain some parents to watch but most teenagers and twenty-somethings will love it. And let’s face it. Most warm-blooded male species on this planet will totally relate to the movie. I know for myself, I sat there and watched five years of my life playing out on that screen. Underage drinking? Trying to get laid, constantly? Talking about women? The vulgar language? The weiner jokes? Been there, done that. Even into my 30’s now, my life has not changed too much, sadly.

Anyways, back to the movie. It’s as funny as hell. The cast is simply perfect. Jonah Hill, who you will recognize as the fat kid from Knocked Up , is a star in Superbad. We also get hilarious appearances by co-writer Seth Rogen and Bill Hader as Officer Michaels and Officer Slater. But the star of this movie is McLovin. Christopher Mintz-Plasse is a scene-stealer with every geeky line he recites and every nerdy move he makes. It’s big screen comedy at its best when this guy is throwing out his lines and wooing the women.

Overall, I would say Superbad certainly ranks up there with Knocked Up as the funniest movie of the year. Not every joke hits one out of the park, but it’s got more laughs from beginning to end than any movie I can remember in recent memory. It’s a bit vulgar at times and a bit ridiculous at others, but the majority of men who, at some point in their pathetic life went through the high school ritual of getting drunk and trying to get any kind of action at all, will probably feel like they are looking in a mirror when they are watching Superbad. Certainly after this performance McLovin has a bright future ahead of him, even though it will in all likelihood be vagina-less. I saw Superbad with a childhood friend of mine who I hadn’t seen in years. He just happened to be in town on the night of the screening. He was my McLovin growing up. The two of us hadn’t laughed like this in years. If you can see Superbad with your McLovin, I highly recommend you do so. (8 out of 10)
