Transformers Invades Box Office

In the tradition set by many other notable big-budget science fiction films, Transformers once again proved that critical disdain does not necessarily translate into box office disaster.

Michael Bay’s most recent project, Transformers, referred to by once critic as, “the most expensive television commercial ever made”, exploded into the box office this week, raking in $67.6 million during the weekend, and $152.5 million domestically in its first 6 days of release. The haul must have been particularly good news for the film’s star, Shia LaBeouf who, with this latest success, has now solidified his position as Hollywood’s newest leading man.

Taking second place was Disney Pixar’s critically-acclaimed animated film, Ratatouille. Dropping from last week’s first-place position, the film earned $29 million, bringing its domestic gross box office sales to $109.5 million.

Live Free or Die Hard, the latest installment in the Die Hard franchise, fell from second to third place, bringing in $17.4 million. Apparently, John McClane can fight terrorists and fighter planes, but Transformers are outside of even his league.

License to Wed, the comedy starring Robin Williams and Mandy Moore, failed to marry itself to film audiences, coming in fourth place with $10.4 million in box office sales.

Proving it was no one-night stand, Knocked Up retained its stronghold on the box office by rounding out the top five. It brought in $5.2 million, bringing its domestic box office sales to $132 million.

While John McClane may be no match for the Transformers, we think we know a certain Wizard who will. This Thursday sees the release of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix – and we have no doubt that a group of robots are about to find themselves being zapped into second place…
