300 Crushes Box Office Competition

300 was the top movie at the box office this weekend earning an estimated $70 million and setting a new record for the month of March. The movie averaged a massive $22,500 per theater at just over 3,100 locations. The previous record-holder for March was Ice Age: The Meltdown which opened last year with $68 million.

Last weekend’s top movie, Wild Hogs, fell to 2nd place earning $28 million. The movie dropped a mere 29% from last weekend and has now earned $77.4 million.

Disney’s Bridge to Terabithia finished 3rd with $6.86 million. After 4 weekends of release, the kids fantasy movie has now earned $67 million.

Finishing 4th was Ghost Rider which added another $6.8 million to its total. The movie became the first movie released in 2007 to cross the $100 million mark with a 4-week total of $104.1 million.

Rounding out the top-5 was Zodiac which earned $6.7 million. After 2 weekends of release, the David Fincher serial killer drama has earned a somewhat disappointing $23.7 million.

Next weekend’s new releases include Premonition starring Sandra Bullock and Julian McMahon, I Think I Love My Wife starring Chris Rock and the horror Dead Silence from the creators of Saw.
