Happy Feet Tops Box Office

Happy Feet was the top movie at the box office for a third straight weekend earning an estimated $17 million. The animated singing penguin movie has now earned $121 million.
Also for a third straight weekend, Casino Royale was the runner up at the box office, this time around earning just north of $15 million. The Bond movie’s 3-weekend total now stands at $115 million.
Finishing 3rd (also repeating from last weekend) was the Denzel Washington action flick Deja Vu. After 2 weeks of release, the movie has earned $44 million.
The only new release to crack the top-5 was The Nativity Story which opened with $8 million which seems somewhat disappointing given the box office earned by the last “Jesus” movie, The Passion of the Christ. That movie opened with $83 million. So, either Nativity will drop off the charts next weekend, or it will continue to earn modestly over the next few weekends leading up to Christmas. Time will tell…
Rounding out the top-5 was the holiday comedy Deck the Halls starring Matthew Broderick and Danny DeVito which earned $6.6 million. It’s unclear at this point if the movie was helped or hurt by DeVito’s “performance” earlier this week on TV’s “The View”.
Of the weekend’s other new releases, Turistas opened in 8th with $3.5 million while National Lampoon’s Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj opened in 10th with $2.3 million.
Next weekend’s new releases include Apocalypto directed by Mel Gibson, Blood Diamond starring Leonardo DiCaprio, The Holiday with Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz and the kiddie flick Unaccompanied Minors.
