Movie Review: The Wicker Man
In The Wicker Man, Nicolas Cage is Edward Malus, a California highway patrol officer who has not only recently witnessed a tragic accident but he has also just found out that his ex-fiance has a daughter and her daughter is missing. He probably shouldn’t even care, but Edward seems like a nice guy so he heads off to the private community where Sister Willow (his ex) lives to help her find her child. When he gets there, he realizes that Summersisle is not your average, everyday community. It’s run by a bunch of women who seem to live like menonites but they also have a handful of strange rituals and lifestyle things going on, including perhaps sacrificing innocent children. Edward sets out to find the missing child because it turns out that none of the women want to give him any help at all and none of the men are even capable of speaking. The Wicker Man then focuses on the hunt for the missing girl before she is sacrificed and the oddness of the community that refuses to help find her.
The Wicker Man is a very strange movie indeed. It’s not the borderline horror movie I was hoping it would be. In fact, there is not a scary moment in the entire movie. It has laughs in it more than anything. I never saw the original movie so I can’t make any comparisons, but to me, this version of The Wicker Man certainly had its moments. But overall, it was a little too wierd for my liking. I mean, the movie isn’t a complete write-off but I just found it was sort of promoted as a horror and it is anything but a horror. In many respects, I found The Wicker Man to be a bit like The Village but not nearly as entertaining. I actually found the ending of the movie to be quite good and I liked the cameos at the very end. There were parts in the middle that were pretty intense and it was kind of fun trying to figure out exactly what the hell was going on but this movie might be good for one viewing and one viewing only. And on DVD for that matter. To me, it’s just one of those one-shot movie and even then, I would be surprised if half the people who see it like it. Definitely an oddball movie that really makes you wonder why it was ever remade. (5 out of 10)
