Hugh Jackman Rides CarouselHugh Jackman will star in a remake of the musical Carousel for Fox 2000.

In the movie, Jackman would play Billy Bigelow, a carnival barker whose temper puts him in the middle of a botched robbery and leads to his death. Stuck in purgatory, he’s given one day to return and fix the problems he left behind — namely a teenager who has a lot of his rebellious traits. The original film, released in 1956, starred Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones. A deal is being negotiated with the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization for rights to use the music and lyrics the duo wrote for the 1945 stage musical. Carousel was last revived on Broadway in 1994 in a Tony-winning run.

Jackman is currently in theaters in Woody Allen’s Scoop. He next stars in Chris Nolan’s The Prestige which Disney releases in October and in Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain which Warner Bros. will release in November.
