Will Smith Is Legend
Will Smith is back on board Warner Bros.’ I Am Legend, this time for director Francis Lawrence.
Set in post-apocalyptic New York, the adaptation of the Richard Matheson novel follows the last healthy man following the release of a virus that decimates the population. To survive, he must battle mutants that wreak havoc during the night. Akiva Goldsman will rewrite the original script by Mark Protosevich.
Smith was previously attached to the project in 2002 with Michael Bay set to direct but it never got off the ground. Arnold Schwarzenegger was set to star in 1997 for director Ridley Scott but production stalled after the budget (then $108 million) got out of hand.
Lawrence last directed Constantine starring Keanu Reeves. Production on Legend will likely begin in early 2007 after Smith completes Tonight, He Comes at Sony. Big Willie is currently shooting Columbia’s Pursuit of Happyness. He’s also attached to Greenbacks for Fox, It Takes a Thief for Universal and Columbia’s Time Share with Nicolas Cage.
I Am Legend was previously brought to the big screen as The Last Man on Earth with Vincent Price and The Omega Man with Charlton Heston.
