Silent Hill wasn’t so silent this weekend, scaring up $20.2 million in ticket sales to top the box office. Based on the popular video game, the movie stars Radha Mitchell as a young mother desperate to find a cure for her only child’s illness who flees with her child to the abandoned town of Silent Hill. Sean Bean, Laurie Holden and Deborah Kara Unger also star.

Meanwhile, previous box office champ Scary Movie 4 scared away more than 57% of its audience over last weekend dropping to 2nd place with $17 million. After two weeks, the horror-comedy has earned $67.7 million.

Of the weekend’s other new releases, The Sentinel starring Michael Douglas and Kiefer Sutherland finished 3rd with a respectable $14.6 million. On the flip side of that coin, Paul Weitz’ American Dreamz starring Hugh Grant and Dennis Quaid tanked in 8th place with only $3.9 million. (It should be noted that Dreamz opened on over 1,000 fewer screens – however it earned only $2,400 per screen versus $6,900 for Silent Hill and $5,200 for The Sentinel.)

Rounding out the top ten at the box office were Ice Age: The Meltdown (4th) with $12.8 million, The Wild (5th) with $8 million, The Benchwarmers (6th) with $7.3 million, Take the Lead (7th) with $4.2 million, Inside Man (9th) with $3.6 million and Friends with Money (10th) with $3.5 million.

Next weekend’s new releases include the 9/11 drama United 93, RV starring Robin Williams, Akeelah and the Bee starring Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett and Stick It starring Jeff Bridges and Missy Peregrym.
