JJ Abrams Takes TrekJ.J. Abrams will produce and direct the 11th film in the Star Trek franchise for a 2008 release.

The project will center on the early days of Kirk and Spock including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer space mission. Abrams will also write the film with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Abrams teamed with Kurtzman and Orci on Mission: Impossible III due in theaters next month. Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk will produce. Lindelof and Burk are also producers with Abrams on TV’s “Lost”.

“Star Trek” has spawned 10 feature films that have grossed more than $1 billion and 726 TV episodes from six series. However, the series has stumbled over the last few years with the cancelation of TV’s “Star Trek: Enterprise” due to poor ratings and the failure of Star Trek: Nemesis at the box office with only $43 million.
