David Hayter Writing Black MondayDavid Hayter will adapt Black Monday as a disaster movie for Paramount Pictures.

Based on an as-yet-unpublished novel by Bob Reiss, the story follows a catastrophic virus that threatens to destroys the world’s oil supply and the federal investigator who tries to stop it. Set to be published by Simon & Schuster, the book was bought in a preemptive deal last fall after Reiss had only written the first 100 pages.

“The basic concept is similar conceptually to Roland Emmerich’s ’Day After Tomorrow’, in that it is highly visual and exciting, but it is socially conscious with something to say,” Hayter said. “We find out how disastrous it is to be so heavily vested in one resource.”

Hayter is best known for writing the original two X-Men movies.
