Bryce Dallas Howard is Gwen Stacy
Bryce Dallas Howard has signed to play Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man 3.
Howard would play the third part of a love triangle involving Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson. (I suppose you could also add Spider-Man into that triangle, but that would make it a love square which just isn’t as cool as a love triangle…)
So, we’ve got Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man, Kristen Dunst as Mary Jane, Bryce Dallas Howard as Gwen and James Franco as Harry Osborne. Also, based on what we know from Sony, Thomas Haden Church will play Sandman. Now, according to Variety, we’ve also got Topher Grace confirmed as playing Venom. We’ll also probably see James Franco take over for his father as The Green Goblin. (That’s a lot of great characters for one movie. I’m beginning to wonder just how Sam Raimi is planning to pull this off.)
According to comic book lore, Gwen was Peter’s first love. She was kidnapped by the Green Goblin and died during a bridgetop battle (see “Amazing Spider-Man” issue 121). In the original Spider-Man movie however, it was Mary Jane who got kidnapped. In true Hollywood fashion, she survived the bridgetop battle.
Sam Raimi will return to direct from a script by Alvin Sargent based on a story by Raimi and his brother Ivan. Filming begins this week.
Howard first starred in M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village. She can be seen later this year in Shyamalan’s Lady in the Water with Paul Giamatti.
