Movie Review: HostelIn Hostel, three buddies go backpacking around Europe with a typical male goal in mind – to get laid. They eventually find their way to a hostel in Bratislava where beautiful women walk around naked and have gratuitous sex. Paxton (Jay Hernandez), Josh (Derek Richardson) and Oli (Eythor Gudjonsson) are in heaven, or at least it seems as close to heaven as three horny men will ever get. But Hostel is not a movie about heaven and as expected, strange and brutal things start happening. Oli disappears, and Josh and Paxton discover that Bratislava is too good to be true. What started as the trip of a lifetime turns into the vacation from hell, with plenty of torture, blood, guts, puke and pain. The movie is supposed to be based on true events. That’s pretty fucked up.

Hostel is the second studio movie by director Eli Roth (and according to the trailer, “presented” by Quentin Tarantino – whatever that means) and to me personally, his best effort. This movie has a lot more interesting story, a better cast, way more excitement and is not all about blood and guts. It probably doesn’t hurt that the movie is loaded (and I mean loaded) with T&A – and I’m talking about consistently some of the best T&A that I have seen in a theatre in a long time. There are times this movie teeters on being soft-core porn. It’s really quite outstanding.

As for the gore, well, “gore fans” will be happy to know that there are plenty of fingers being chopped off, eyeballs being ripped out, throats being sliced open and even an incident with and Achilles tendon. It takes a while for the gore part of the movie to kick it but it doesn’t disappoint. I can think of a couple of scenes where I almost turned away.

In the end, Hostel is not going to go down as one of the great horror movies ever made. It’s not even all that scary. More exciting than scary. It is a pretty damn entertaining movie and another solid effort from a director who seems like he will bring us nohting but good things in the future. (7 out of 10)
