Movie Review: ValiantValiant (Ewan McGregor) is an ambitious but under-sized pigeon who dreams of one day joining the Royal Homing Pigeon Service (RHPS), an elite group of pigeons who deliver messages to troops behind enemy lines during World War II. He manages to join the RHPS despite his physical limitations and goes through the rigourous training to become an esteemed member. Valiant and a small group of rag-tag pigeons form what becomes know as “Squad F” and when Squads A, B, C, D and E all go down for various reasons, it is up to Squad F to deliver an important message to the troops. In doing so, they must also avoid the evil General Von Talon and his brigade of enemy falcons who have been attacking the pigeons throughout the war. Besides McGregor, Valiant’s all-star cast of voices includes Ricky Gervais, Tim Curry, Jim Broadbent and John Cleese.

Valiant is a decent foray in the world of animation. It’s got some competent graphics, the story is okay, there are likeable characters, a few chuckles and overall, it’s a nice, clean, harmless movie for the young ones. I don’t see this movie having the impact of a Finding Nemo or a Monsters, Inc. or anything like that but it should have no problem being one of the kiddies favourite movies of the summer.

As I said earlier, it might not be an outstanding piece of work, but it’s fun, it’s clean and it’s a safe movie and nowadays, we don’t always get that from supposed “kids” movies (see Bad New Bears). (6.5 out of 10)
