Tom HanksIn news that really doesn’t come as any surprise, Tom Hanks will star in Charlie Wilson’s War for Universal Pictures. Hanks was previously attached to the movie as a producer and it seems only natural for him to step into the title role.

The movie tells the story of the CIA’s covert operation in Afghanistan to arm the mujahedeen. It was engineered by Charlie Wilson (to be played by Hanks), a charismatic, womanizing, liberal Texas congressman who teamed up with a rogue CIA operative named Gust Avrakatos. The two manipulated Congress, the CIA and a host of foreign governments in order to assist the Afghan rebels in their fight against the Soviets in the 1980s. His efforts hastened the fall of the Iron Curtain.

A director on the project has not yet been chosen. Aaron Sorkin was brought in last year to write the script. A tentative spring start date is planned.

Charlie Wilson’s War will be the next film Hanks makes after he completes The Da Vinci Code for director Ron Howard and Sony.
