Luke WilsonLuke Wilson will star in Hoot, a family drama for New Line Cinema.

Based on Carl Hiaasen’s Newbery Award-winning book of the same name, Hoot tells the story of a Montana boy who moves with his family to Florida, where he uncovers a plot to destroy a local population of endangered owls. He battles unusual creatures and eccentric adults in order to save the owls. In the movie, Wilson will portray David Delinko, a bumbling cop whose investigation is stymied by the boy (Logan Lerman) and his friend (Brie Larson).

Wil Shriner will write and direct with Jimmy Buffett providing original music. Buffett will also serve as a producer.

To be honest, the project seems beneath Wilson to me, but who am I to say? Wilson can be seen in theaters later this year in The Family Stone and the Mike Judge comedy Idiocracy.
