The Interpreter Leads Box Office

If you think the pictures above is Nicole Kidman on the phone with her agent who’s just told her she’s in the top movie at this weekend’s box office, you wouldn’t be too far off. It’s actually a photo from Kidman’s The Interpreter, which topped the box office with an estimated $22.9 million in tickets sold. The movie, also starring Sean Penn, opened to wide critical acclaim, marking a successful return to the director’s chair for Sydney Pollack after a 6-year absence.

The weekend’s other two new releases didn’t fare as well. A Lot Like Love opened with $7.7 million in 4th place. The romantic comedy stars Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet as a couple who meet on and off over the course of several years, eventually hooking up ala When Harry Met Sally. Meanwhile, New Line’s King’s Ransom starring Anthony Anderson was a complete flop, earning $2.2 million. On the bright side, it did finish in the top 10. On the not so bright side, it landed in 10th spot.

Kung Fu Hustle expanded to more than 2500 screens and reaped the benefits, earning an estimated $7.3 million, good enough for 5th place.

Elsewhere in the top 10, last weekends #1 movie, The Amityville Horror dropped to 2nd with an estimated $14.2 million. The movie has earned $43.8 million to date. Sahara continued to do not so well. Although standing in 3rd place after 3 weekends in release, the movie has only earned $48.9 million to date. The movie cost an estimated $130 to make.

The top ten was rounded out by Fever Pitch in 6th place ($5.4 million), Sin City in 7th place ($3.7 million), Guess Who? in 8th place ($3.5 million) and Robots in 9th place ($3.3 million).

Overall, the box office was down for the ninth straight weekend, with the top 12 movies earning only $83.4 million – just under the earnings for the same weekend last year.

Next weekend’s wide released include xXx: State of the Union starring Ice Cube and Disney’s highly anticipated release of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
