’Southland Tales’ Cast
For a movie that’s had an official site forever (check it out here), it’s hard to imagine that this is the first we’ve heard of any casting – or really what the story is all about.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Seann William William Scott and Sarah Michelle Gellar will star in the science-fiction thriller Southland Tales for writer-director Richard Kelly and Cherry Road Films. Production is scheduled to begin in Los Angeles August 1st. Here’s how the official press release sets it up:
Southland Tales is an ensemble piece set in the futuristic landscape of Los Angeles on July 4, 2008, as it stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster. Johnson will star as Boxer Santaros, an action star stricken with amnesia whose life intertwines with Krysta Now (Gellar), an adult film star developing her own reality television project, and David Clark (Scott), a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy.
The Rock playing an action star – that’s not really a stretch. But Sarah Michelle Gellar as an “adult film star”… That’s the most inspired casting since Jessica Alba was chosen to play Nancy in Sin City. Nice choice!
Also set to work on Southland are several key crew members from Kelly’s Donnie Darko. They includ director of photography Steven Poster ASC, production designer Alexander Hammond, costume designer April Ferry and editor Sam Bauer. Moby will compose the music for the film.
Besides the feature film, plans are underway for an expanded version of Southland Tales including a a nine-part interactive experience with the prequel saga to be published as six separate 100 page graphic novels, each written by Kelly. The graphic novels will be released over a six month period early next year leading up to the film’s release with the feature film comprised of the story’s final three chapters. The aforementioned official website will continue to be updated, with hopes of making it one of the largest and most elaborate ever designed for a feature film. According to Kelly, “the graphic novels will work in tandem with the website, creating a more epic multimedia experience for those interested in taking the plunge.”
