Travolta in Hairspray
I was just thinking the other day how cheap it seems that the big promotion around MGM’s Be Cool is the dance number with John Travolta and Uma Thurman. During one of my several-daily visits to JoBlo.com yesterday, I read on this article. Check it out. I couldn’t have said it better myself.
So, with the release of Be Cool, comes news today of a new Travolta project. The erstwhile Vinnie Barbarino is close to signing for the movie version of the Broadway musical Hairspray in the role of Edna Turnblad. (Yes, that’s a woman.) Harvey Fierstein created the stage role. Divine played the role in the 1988 John Waters movie.
Also, screenwriter Leslie Dixon (Travolta’s Look Who’s Talking Now) will replace Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan on the project. O’Donnell and Meehan wrote the book for the musical. Dixon previously visited crossdressing territory in Mrs. Doubtfire with Robin Williams.
Hairspray is expected to begin shooting this September.
