Hitch Tops Box OfficeI don’t think it’ll surprise too many people to learn that Hitch was the number one movie this weekend. The real surprise, at least to me, is that the movie earned as much as it did. $45.3 million?! How did that happen? Yeah, I know it’s Valentine’s Day weekend and with the number of terrible releases over the last few weeks there was little to no competition, but c’mon! $45.3 million?!

Not only did this movie break the record for Valentine’s Day weekend (previously held by 50 First Dates) but it now ranks as the #1 opening for a romantic comedy – all time – a record also previously held by 50 First Dates.

The weekend’s only other major release was Pooh’s Heffalump Movie which earned $6 million, good enough for 5th place in the weekend’s top 10.

Boogeyman, last weekend’s number one movie, fell to 2nd place earning an estimated $10.8 million while Are We There Yet? held strong in 3rd with $8.5 million.

As with the last few weeks, the top 10 was also littered with Oscar nominees. Million Dollar Baby rose to 4th place earning $7.5 million and The Aviator dropped to 9th $4.6 million. Surprisingly, Sideways dropped 167 screens but its earnings rose 2% over last weekend. The movie finished in 8th with $4.75 million.

New releases next weekend include Constantine, Because of Winn Dixie and Son of the Mask.
